6. Mathematical Logic - to 1931

The work of Russell and Wittgenstein on the logical foundations of mathematics, were not the only sources of innovation in these areas. Set theory had made substantial progress despite Cantor's awareness of ``inconsistent multiplicities'', and it was natural to expect that mathematicians interested in set theory would seek a solution to the antinomies which had minimal impact on established methods.
